Overview of IELTS Exam

The International English Language Testing System is known as the IELTS exam. The British Council administers the test in collaboration with Cambridge Assessment and IDP Australia. The exam evaluates a candidate’s proficiency with the English language in typical real world contexts. Non native English speakers or those for whom English is not the primary language of instruction or communication are the target audience for the test.

Candidates can use IELTS in three different ways:

Migration: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom accept IELTS scores for immigration.

Studying: IELTS scores are used by thousands of educational and training institutions worldwide to choose their students.

Working: IELTS is used by many workplaces and professional registration agencies as proof of English language competency.

IELTS Exam in Kuwait

The exam is basically in two formats, computer and paper based. The sort of exam the candidate wishes to take is chosen by them.

A candidate may take the Academic and General adaptations of the IELTS exam.

Academic: Applicants pursuing professional registration or further education in an English speaking setting must take the IELTS academic exam. It evaluates your readiness to start training or studying and reflects some of the characteristics of academic language. The majority of the organisations that accept IELTS endorse this strategy.

General: Those who are travelling to English speaking nations for secondary school, job experience or training programs should take the IELTS General Training exam. Migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and UK also requires it.

The exam consists of 4 parts conducted on same day or across two different days or sessions. The four parts are as follows:

Listening: The candidate is expected to answer questions based on listening to conversation between native English speakers.

Reading: The candidate answers questions after reading a passage or group of written work and comprehending the meaning and context of the text.

Writing: The candidate needs to display his proficiency at directed writing by producing 2 pieces of writing. Example  A letter, a report, description of places, events and opinions on general topics.

Speaking: This section is more like an Interview where the examiner will ask you to introduce yourself and then ask you to speak on a topic for 2 to 3 minutes. The activity is followed by some questions which require explanation of ideas logically and expression of opinion on generic topics.

IELTS Scoring

The IELTS exam is scored on a scale of 1 to 9 bands for all the four sections. The exam report the section wise score on the 1 to 9 band scale and reports an overall score on a scale of 1 to 9 band. The overall score is the average of the four sections.

The band score obtained by the candidate displays the level at which the candidate is with each component. The table below gives a brief description as to what is indicated by the band scores obtained by the candidate.
